“Illness, madness and death were the black angels that watched over my cradle and have since followed me through life,” - Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944)
Munch's sister Sophie died of tuberculosis in 1877 aged 15. The death had a profound effect on Munch and he returned to the motif many times throughout his life.
According to Munch his sisters last request was to sit in a chair “I so much want to live”, she said, “I think we have such good times together”
